Business English online course syllabus

This is a 10-week business English course for TSU students

Objectives and Outcomes of the Course:

The course is intended to provide those BA students with extra-curriculumn material who learn Business English at the university and need some more practice in this direction
The on-line course offers a wide range of online-material about some key aspects of Business sphere.
It is oriented on the issues of business vicabulary, writing business letters and business ethics.

At the end of the course students will be able

To discuss some basic issues of business in English by using rich business English vocabulary
To write freely simple business letters in English.
To gain the knowledge of basic Business terms and definitions.
To interact freely with friends and other course members in English

I WEEK: 1 October- 10 October

• At the beginning of the course students should get to know with each other and share some interesting ideas on the forum - By way of introduction.
• During the week they also have to get access to some useful web-sites that give significant tips and extra material in Business English Learning. They will have to be introduced to the BBC Business English and other sites mainly regarding the techniques of writing Business letters and communicating in  business environment
• Apart from business English tips students get assistance in identifying some key business concepts by using the given web-sites.


II WEEK: 11 October- 17 October

During this week:

        Students must rate their expectations about the course in percentages.

• The topic of the week is “Small Business”. Students will read a short informative story about the main types of small business.
• Also, they can find more detailed information about the specific terms and definitions concerning small business from useful web-sites given in this section.
• Apart from this, they will be able to watch videos displaying small business marketing strategies.
• During the week students should do the quiz about words, phrases and their definitions.


III WEEK: 18 October-24 October

During this week:

• The topic of this week is “Multinationals and LTDs”. Students will read a short informative story about the definitions of multinationals and LTDs.
• Also, they can find more detailed information about the specific terms and definitions on the web-site indicated.
        Students can also find a documentary video on BPR/ business process reengineering and listen to its definition
• During the week students have to do two tasks: 1. They should do the quiz about the learnt vocabulary. 2. They should write an assignment of 100-120 words describing what they would do if they were businessmen and upload the file in the indicated area.

IV WEEK: 25 October-31 October

During this week
• students must do their progress quiz about the learnt material.
• They should discuss the given statement on the forum space
• Read the article about advertising
• Do the multiple matvhing according to the article


V WEEK: 1 November-7 November

During the week:

• Students have to find some information about famous people (businesspeople are preferred). Here I the useful link for getting ideas and time saving reasons.
• They can also get access to some interesting videos giving  the best business speeches.
• Students must choose two people from the history of art or business and compare them according to their biographical data, business activities and wprld acclaim received after their deaths and submit their wtiring to the course.
• They should submit an online writing in the journal  describing what are their needs and weaknesses in Business English and would like to get help from the teacher.

        Students are given sample presentation about a best seller on the scale of the world. They are required to prepare a similer presentation about any best-seller in their country and submit it to the assignment section.

VI WEEK: 8 November-14 November

During the week:

• The topic of the week is “Business and Recruiting:. Students will read a short informative story about the key aspects of the topic.
• They have to do the quiz about the learnt words and their meanings.
• They must share their views and opinions about an ideal job interview on the forum space.
• They should use the given link and fond out how different business letters are written
• They must produce their own on-line writing- A letter of application by using the information received from the web-sites.



VII WEEK: 15 November- 21 November

During the week:

• The topic of the week is “Job Description ” Students will read a short informative story about the key aspects of the topic.
• They have to do the quiz about the learnt words and their meanings.
• Students can read more about the features that make a goof businessman on the web-site indicated
• They should produce their own piece of writing under the title “A typical Manager” and upload the file in the given area.


VIII WEEK: 22 November- 28 November

During the week:

• The topic of the week is “Understanding Customer Information” Students will read an informative article about the key aspects of the topic.
• They have to do the quiz to show how they comprehended the text.
• Students should also do the true-false questions


IX WEEK: 29 November- 5 December

During the week:

• The topic of the week is business meetings. Students should find some useful vocabulary on the given web-sites
• They have to watch videos displaying how to lead effective business meetings.
• They should write an assignment of about 80-100 words describing some potential issues of the upcoming meeting at the chocolate company.

X WEEK: 6 December-12 December

During the final week:

• Students should discuss the importance of teaching Business English to the students of the faculty of Humanities by using choice section.
• They should discuss and share their feelings and opinions about the course, particularly, they should discuss if their expectations were met or not.
• In this final section they have the opportunity to chat with each other about the advantages and disadvantages of the Business English Online course.
